29 February – second break

Feeling a bit weak this morning. I had a pretty good night’s sleep but I think my body wants to take it easy after yesterday’s activity. I had no idea that I would feel so completely knackered after standing in line at the voting location. I had to walk maybe half a block back to my car and I wondered if I would make it! This is my new normal though, and will be until I’m completely recovered from all the chemo treatments. My strong days still outnumber my weak days but I have to listen to my body when it digs in its heals and says, “Nope, not gonna do it.”

Rory and Leyna did their usual Saturday morning walk to 2Tarts today so I picked them up at around 11am and we walked down to the farmers market. It was so nice to be out in the sun on such a beautiful day. I made a beeline for the organic veggie booth and found a glorious head of romanesco (sort of a green cauliflower that tastes like a cross between that vegetable and broccoli) and two bunches of beets. We got home and I spent the next good half hour cleaning and trimming the beets and their greens. I’m going to make juice with the roots and the greens should be tasty sautéed with some garlic and thinly sliced onion or shallot.

The afternoon was quiet. I parked myself outside on the back deck for a while and enjoyed the sun and warmth while Rory got out the riding mower and hacked down the growing jungle in the back yard. We didn’t have any real options for dinner so Rory headed out to HEB for provisions. We ended up grilling some steaks on the BBQ and had a HUGE pile of asparagus to go along with the meat. YUM! Tomorrow night I’m going to tackle making a galette with some of the leftovers in the fridge. I’ll have to take it in stages though, because of my lack of strength.
