We had a week of some very, VERY good food. Rory and I have been forced to get more creative in the kitchen due to Leyna’s vegetarian-bordering-on-vegan dietary choices and I’ve been scrambling to find more recipes that suit her tastes but that other members of the family can enjoy. I think the highlight was Wednesday’s dinner – roasted carrots and red onions served on a bed of red lentil hummus. Holy frickin’ moly, it was amazing! It hit all the notes – rich, savory, caramelized yumminess. With a side of sautéed asparagus, Leyna nearly licked her plate clean. We fell off the veggie wagon last night though, mainly because Rory and I were craving a bit of meat and I was nearly snarling. We had some grilled chicken legs. I inhaled every morsel on my plate and then snarfed down Lauren’s portion after she poked at it a few times, ingested a few molecules and then declared that she was done. Tonight’s meal is a mushroom risotto that Leyna is currently building. If it tastes half as good as it smells we’re in for a real treat!

(Holy crap. The kid just gave me a taste of the risotto. WOW.)

The maintenance treatment continues. I’ve been having the worst time remembering to take my mid-day pill, even when I set a stupid alarm, but otherwise I haven’t been experiencing any real problems other than a renewed tingling in my fingertips and some numbness in the balls of my feet. Neuropathy is a common side effect of chemo apparently but it’s annoying as hell. The bruising on my left arm from the lab’s blood draw has nearly disappeared and I can’t even see where the IV needle was inserted on my right wrist. I have another 2 1/2 weeks until my next appointment so I should be in really good shape. Now if I could just figure out how to get the mosquitos to leave me the hell alone… 😱

It’s now early Monday morning and I’m sitting in the waiting room of an ambulatory surgery center here in town. Rory’s having the first of two cataract surgeries and I’m to be his eyes for the day. He’s told me to just go home and wait until I hear from him so I may do that. The waiting room isn’t crowded but I’d still feel safer in my own home. Plus, it’s FREEZING in here!
